The Importance of Persistence

I had the pleasure of being interviewed by Boomy Tokan: Udemy Premium Instructor, Small Business Consultant, Speaker and Author of 5 business books. His goal is to help “1st Time Entrepreneurs” and “New Startups” uncover the Step by Step process to starting and running successful businesses and to enable those in employment increase their value in the workplace. It was an absolute blast and encourage you all to play around his website. I talked a bit about persistence and not letting the first hurdle stop you. If you were driving a car from Chicago to Los Angeles, and they were repairing a road so you had to detour, would you turn around and go back to Chicago? Of course not. The same is true in your online business. Yes, you will have detours. Yes, you will have hurdles. You should connect to your passion and stick with it.

I provided him with a “one page business plan” that’s more like four pages. He’ll send it to you if you sign up on his website. Ping me if you want it and I’ll send it out to you.

Next up, true confession time. I also have a coach…CJ Ortiz – The Metal Motivator. He puts everything into perspective. He always has the first day of the weekly coaching free. This week is on persistence Enjoy.

How to Learn Affiliate Marketing

We talked about how affiliate marketing is a great way to set up an online business. You make a recommendation for a product like a book or a course, and if someone buys, you get a commission.

You can make money from the internet

It sounds simple enough, but is it? There are three keys for a successful affiliate marketing website.

Research and Test

The first key is to do your research. Before you even register a domain and set up a website, you need to find keyword phrases that people are actually searching for. Then you need to identify products or services that answer that call.

People are ready to buy when they have a pain and they’re convinced the item they found is going to solve that problem. If someone has a toothache, they may search for home remedies and possibly even an information product. If they’re in a lot of pain, though, they’re getting in the car and going to the neighborhood drug store.

The bottom line is to figure out how to get the right information to the right people at the right time. This requires research and testing.

Authenticity and Authority

The second key is being able to provide useful content. Your actual reviews should be as honest and detailed as possible to build up your authenticity and authority. Help people to visualize what their lives would be like if they purchased that product. If they do purchase and it’s a positive experience, they will trust you.

If people feel they can trust you, they’ll part with more of their money.

In addition to reviews, you should have articles that are pure content. They can be tips, FAQs, problems/solutions, etc. You want to convince your readers that you believe it will solve their problems. They will then look to you as the authority and come back to your site.

Drive Traffic

The third key for affiliate marketing is to know how to drive traffic. You can have the best site in the world, but if you don’t know how to drive traffic to it, it’s going to sit there in a graveyard, and you’ll wonder why you did all that work.

Facebook ads are a great way of getting targeted traffic to your reviews. You will also want to test additional channels such as posting articles, commenting on blogs and forums, social media, videos, partnerships, etc.

In future articles, I’ll go into more depth for each of these keys. Have you tried setting up an affiliate website before? How well did it work? Please leave your thoughts in the comments. And thanks for reading!

5 of the Most successful Online Business Opportunities

So you think you’re ready to start your online business but don’t know which one to choose? It’s important to follow one course until successful. Often people will start two or three at the same time and none succeed. It may be difficult finding the momentum to stick to one choice. Remind yourself that once this one is bringing in money, you can start up another one. Here’s the five most successful online opportunities.1185569_collection_business_3

Information Marketing

Information marketing simply means writing up what you know and offering it in a way people want to buy. Some people write and sell ebooks on Amazon. Other people create video courses and sell them on Udemy. Think about your career, hobbies and interests. Pretty much anything you know can be turned into something that someone else will buy for some extra cash.

The biggest hurdle here is yourself. Let go of the belief that you’re not an expert. You know more about it than someone else, and that someone may be willing to pay money for your knowledge. To a third grader, a fourth grader is brilliant. So be that fourth grader and sell to first, second and third graders.

You can also use a twelfth grader to get your knowledge. Set up interviews with people who are experts in that area and then you can repackage the knowledge and sell that.

Do you enjoy making things? If so, then there are people out there looking for what you’re making. Don’t limit yourself to once a year holiday boutiques. Set up an online store and let people find you.

Or perhaps you like going to garage sales and thrift stores and finding bargains? Well if the thrill of the hunt is what you enjoy, then you can set up an online store and sell what you found and make a profit.

Your biggest hurdle is packaging and shipping out items, and customer service if the item isn’t what they thought it would be.

Affiliate Marketing

If you’re good at writing up reviews, this is your ideal business. Affiliate marketing is where you’re selling other people’s stuff and you get a cut of the sale. Amazon has a large affiliate sale program and you can recommend anything they sell and provide a link to the product. If people click and buy, you get a small amount.

You can also review and place an affiliate link for information products, online videos, even eBay. There are many programs out there.

The biggest hurdle is staying on top of your links to ensure they’re correct. Some affiliates offer banner ads that you can put on your website, and you need to keep them up to date.

Blogging is great if you have a passion for something and enjoy writing regularly. You could set up a blog for your gardening or cooking or your dog. We’ve all seen the sites. They get their income from ads placed on the site.

Often, the blogger will also embed affiliate links in their posts to pick up multiple streams of income.

Some bloggers will also put together books from their blog posts (i.e. Nom Nom Paleo, Julie and Julia) and earn income through that.

The biggest hurdle is to continue blogging even if you don’t think anyone is reading. And, of course, finding smart ways to get people to go to your website regularly.

Dropship/Fulfillment by Amazon

Dropshipping is where you talk to manufacturers and get authorized by them to sell their products. You can set up an online store, and when someone purchases the item, you then purchase it from the manufacturer at a wholesale price and have it dropshipped directly to the purchaser. You never have to receive the product and reship it. Your profit is your selling cost less wholesale and advertising costs.

Fulfillment by Amazon is where you purchase items in bulk and then have them shipped to an Amazon distribution center. You then list the items for sale in your Amazon store. If someone purchases, Amazon will package it up and ship it to the buyer. Amazon will also help you market the item. If someone looks at the item and then leaves, Amazon will show them ads of that product for a few days afterwards. That’s called retargeting.

The hurdle is in keeping your store updated with new products and ensuring you always have stock available. You will have to do some customer service. Some of these business models require more time up front to get started. Others require a smaller but more consistent time commitment. All can be done part or full time.

Setting Up Your Facebook Fan Page

A Facebook fan page is a web page you create on the Facebook platform. You could create a group which tends to encourage more interaction. However, it’s best to start with a fan page to build up your brand.

And yes, it is possible to create multiple Facebook pages if you’re trying to reach different types of people.

You will need to think about your short name. You used to need 25 likes before you could set the name in the URL for the page. For example, my business Lodestone Consulting Services is  You will want to think about what makes sense for your business based upon your keywords.

10 Quick Ideas for Your Online Business

7K0A9921Start an Online Business Quickly

If you’re thinking of starting a part time online business to build up some funds, here’s ten quick ideas to get you started.

Everyone wants to have more income. Maybe you’re saving up for a down payment on a house, or your kid is going to start college soon. Maybe you want to start college and know that money is coming in.

First off, there are two ways of having an online business. The first is active where you trade your time for money. The second is passive where money is coming in no matter what you do.

I’ll list five of each for this post. Be on the lookout for more ideas. And feel free to look into combining ideas.

Five Active Online Business Ideas

  1. Create a company that sells things for other people on eBay or Craigslist. Send out flyers or post on neighborhood websites like NextDoor offering to sell items for people in exchange for a percentage. Make sure that you include your cost for packing and shipping the item, as you don’t want to spend time on the auction or meeting with people only to find out that you’ve spent your profit.
  2. Sign up to tutor people in an area where you’ve got knowledge.
  3. Create crafts to sell on Etsy, ArtFire or eBay.
  4. Social media manager. You would be responsible for monitoring and managing your clients’ identity on all places social media like Pinterest, Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook, and Instagram.
  5. Resume and cover letter consultant. People sometimes don’t put their best foot forward because they’re too close to be objective. Also, people get really embarrassed when they feel like they’re bragging about their accomplishments. That’s where you come in. You could also charge extra to update their LinkedIn profile.

Five Passive Online Business Ideas

  1. Do you like certain products and telling people about them? You could set up a review site and make money through what’s called “affiliate links.” If someone clicks and buys, you get a percentage of the sale.
  2. Think you’re the next J.K. Rowling if you could just find the time to write? Well, you don’t have to be the next literary giant to make quite a bit of money with ebooks. Learn how to plot out a good story, write it, and put it out there. Then keep publishing more.
  3. Want to create a blog about something you enjoy? You can monetize it with Google Adsense. If people click on an ad, you make money. This isn’t a huge income stream usually, but it is a possibility. And works decently when you set up affiliate links.
  4. If you enjoy training, create videos and workbooks. Then you can set up a membership site where people pay a monthly fee to access your training and forums where they can talk to one another about it.
  5. Set up a trading site. If you have knowledge of a niche item, set up a website educating people on it, and provide a service where people can buy and sell from one another, and you take a percentage or a flat fee.

It’s definitely easier to set up an inexpensive and profitable online business.

And here’s me telling you about five of them in a post I was challenged to do for the Quick Start Challenge. Enjoy and leave some comments.
